Former Uganda Cranes Midfielder Michael Azira Appointed Head Coach in United States

MOBILE, Alabama — Former Uganda Cranes and Major League Soccer (MLS) midfielder Micheal Azira has officially transitioned into the next chapter of his football career. In an exciting developmental milestone for Ugandan representation in global sports coaching, Azira has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Men’s Soccer program at his alma mater, the University of Mobile in Alabama, USA.

The Kampala-born tactician brings a highly decorated professional background and a deep understanding of the American soccer landscape to the collegiate program, succeeding long-time head coach Daniel Whelan.

A Full-Circle Homecoming

Azira’s appointment marks a nostalgic homecoming. Long before his successful stints in the top flight of American soccer, he made a name for himself as one of the University of Mobile Rams' all-time greats during his senior college season in 2011.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Azira emphasized his desire to build both great players and outstanding individuals:

"Returning to the University of Mobile as the head coach for men's soccer is a tremendous blessing and opportunity for my family," Azira said. "My goal is not only to continue adding on to the success of this program but also to shape and develop young men of character, faith, and purpose."

A Stellar Playing Career

Azira’s elite credentials make him a massive asset for recruitment and player development in the United States. His playing career bridges the gap between African international football and the highest tiers of North American soccer:

  • International Pedigree: Representing Uganda on the global stage, Azira earned vital caps for the Uganda Cranes. He was a crucial part of the squad selected by coach Milutin "Micho" Sredojević for the historic 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

  • MLS Veteran: After entering the professional ranks, Azira enjoyed a robust decade-long career in North America. He featured heavily for powerhouse clubs in Major League Soccer, including:

    • Seattle Sounders FC (where he lifted the MLS Supporters' Shield and U.S. Open Cup in 2014)

    • Colorado Rapids

    • Montreal Impact (now CF Montréal, winning the Canadian Championship in 2019)

    • Chicago Fire

  • USL Success: Azira also found silverware in the United Soccer League (USL), famously scoring the championship-winning goal for the Charleston Battery in 2012, and later concluding his professional playing career with New Mexico United.

Fast-Tracking Through the Coaching Ranks

Since hanging up his boots, Azira has moved quickly through the coaching ladder. He gained initial head coaching experience in collegiate soccer with Blue Mountain Christian University and spent summer seasons at the helm of USL League Two side Mississippi Brilla FC.

Equipped with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Mobile and an MBA in Sports Management from Southern New Hampshire University, Azira couples his vast on-field tactical acumen with a strong academic foundation.

University of Mobile Athletic Director Sally Shouppe shared the institution's excitement regarding the hire:

"We are thrilled to welcome Micheal back to Mobile. He brings with him a wealth of experience from his time playing professionally which we believe will bring great results to our program."

As Azira officially takes charge of the Rams, football fans in Uganda and the United States alike will be watching closely to see how the former midfield general translates his trademark grit, discipline, and vision into tactical success from the technical area.
