Uganda Cranes Defender Timothy Awany Signs for Bulgarian Giants Botev Plovdiv

PLOVDIV, BULGARIA — In a major career move, Uganda Cranes central defender Timothy Awany has officially signed with Bulgarian topflight side Botev Plovdiv.

Awany joins Bulgaria's oldest active football club as a free agent, embarking on a fresh European chapter following the expiration of his contract.

A New European Adventure

Awany’s move to Botev Plovdiv marks a significant step forward for the 29-year-old powerhouse. The Bulgarian First League club, widely respected for its rich history and passionate fanbase, secures a seasoned international known for his aerial dominance, physical presence, and tactical discipline.

The move comes shortly after Awany announced his emotional departure from Israeli Premier League side FC Ashdod, where he spent an impressive seven years.

End of an Era at FC Ashdod

Awany originally moved to Israel in July 2019 from Ugandan giants KCCA FC. Over nearly a decade, he established himself as a cornerstone of Ashdod’s defense, eventually rising to captain the team.

Reflecting on his departure on social media, Awany expressed deep gratitude for his time in Israel:

"After seven wonderful years, it's time for me to say goodbye. Thank you Ashdod for your support, friendship, and dedication throughout this journey... The memories, lessons, and achievements we shared will always hold a special place in my heart."

As a veteran of the national team—having represented Uganda at the 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—Awany’s continued activity at the highest levels of European football provides crucial elite experience to Paul Put’s national squad setup.

He joins Botev Plovdiv ahead of their domestic league campaign and potential European qualification qualifiers, where he is expected to immediately compete for a starting spot in the heart of the defense.
