MUBENDE — The highly anticipated 2026 Buganda Masaza Cup officially kicked off with an intense, non-scoring stalemate as defending champions Buweekula were held to a 0-0 draw by a resilient Kyadondo team at the Mubende National Teachers College (NTC) playground on Saturday afternoon.

While Kyadondo’s newly appointed captain, Trevor Kalule, walked away with the Man of the Match plaque for his masterclass in defensive command, it was the unwavering heroics of Kyadondo’s returning shot-stopper, Ashiraf Bwabye, that ultimately silenced the roaring home crowd and frustrated Buweekula’s frontline.

A Royal Welcome to a Fierce Campaign

The colorful season opener was graced by thousands of passionate fans alongside top Buganda Kingdom dignitaries. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Oweek. Charles Peter Mayiga—representing His Majesty the Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II—officially launched the tournament, praising the competition for uniting the youth and preserving cultural heritage.

Once the official ceremonies concluded, the focus shifted to the pitch, where an end-to-end battle immediately unfolded under sunny Mubende skies.

Bwabye Stands Tall Against the Champions

Buweekula, backed by an energetic home crowd, sought to assert their dominance early on. However, Kyadondo’s backline—marshaled by Kalule and reinforced by the brilliance of Bwabye between the sticks—proved completely unbreakable.

Buweekula’s dangerous left-footer, Denis Konde, and defender Fazil Bumba Magoba repeatedly asked questions of the visiting defense. Just before the first hydration break, Magoba delivered a venomous free-kick that seemed bound to cause chaos, only for Bwabye to showcase impeccable handling and claim the ball cleanly.

As the second half progressed, Buweekula’s head coach Ibrahim Kyobe made tactical substitutions to unlock Kyadondo's defense. The pressure intensified inside the final twenty minutes when Livingstone Kaweesi stepped up for a free-kick, testing Bwabye with a powerful, targeted strike. Once again, the Kyadondo custodian tamed the effort with calm composure, preserving his clean sheet and completely deflating the hosts' momentum.

Both Sides Reflect on a Crucial Point

While the lack of goals left fans craving a breakthrough, both team managers found solace in a disciplined defensive display to kickstart their Bulange Group campaigns.

"Opening matches are always difficult, especially when playing away against a determined side like Buweekula. We showed character and discipline, and earning a point here gives us confidence going into the next fixtures." — Trevor Kalule, Kyadondo Captain

With Buddu, Busujju, Buluuli, and Buvuma completing the highly competitive Bulange Group, this hard-earned away point on opening day could prove crucial for Kyadondo's mission to advance deep into the 2026 tournament.
